TOP OF THE BAY

CRUISING ASSOCIATION

North East, Maryland

DOCKLINE - November 1999

FROM THE COMMODORE:

A big thank you to all for choosing me to lead your yacht club into the 21st century.

Let me welcome our new bridge:
Vice Commodore - Carolyn Herbert
Rear Commodore - Pat Johnston
Fleet Captain - Dutch Hildebrand
Fleet Lieutenant - David Mangano
Secretary - Candy Thompson Varnes
Treasurer - Jane Wiertel
And our board of directors:
Bill Cousins
Jack Varnes
Bob Faulkner
Don Heiser
Karen Kent
Art Young

I'm very proud to announce for the first time in TOBCA history, we have a Fleet Chaplain. Mr. Mike Handzo has been appointed to the position.

Please welcome Wendy Mangano aboard as your new membership secretary. Wendy will also double as our sunshine lady!

Also I'm very happy to have appointed Mr. Jerry Cook as your new supply officer. Jerry will be assisted by his first mate, Judi.

One more Jerry; Mr. Jerry Klein has accepted the position of Web Master for another year. (good thing)

I'm looking forward to working with all of you!

We'll start out at the November meeting, where I'll be submitting our Year 2000 annual budget to the directors at 1:00 PM.

It may be November, but we're still busy making plans for upcoming events.

Mark your calendar. The next meeting is Sunday, December 5 at 2:00 PM, North East VFW. The Board of Directors will meet at 1:00 PM. We have an interesting guest speaker from the new Nauti Card, a boater's discount program that's sweeping the bay. This meeting could save you a lot of money on fuel, repairs, dockage and meals. Get your face in the place!

Coming up soon, is the bus trip to the New York City boat show. The date is Jan. 15, 2000. This trip was very popular last year, and I have had many requests that we do it again.

The bus will depart from the Crystal Inn, North East, at 8:00 AM. It will make a stop in Mt. Laurel, NJ near exit 4 of the Turnpike at approximately 9:00AM and return to North East at approximately 8:00 PM.

Seating is limited, so first come, first served. Cost is $30.00 per person, which includes admission to the world's largest indoor boat show. I am taking reservations now.

It may be four months away but I am going to start plugging our ball now!

As you may or may not know TOBCA has held it's biggest event of the year in March for the past five years. This year it's to be held on Saturday, March 4, 2000, at the Ramada Inn, New Castle, Delaware.

You will be given more info as things unfold.

Thank you to all of you who have been so supportive.

P.S. In the spirit of the up coming holiday season, We would like to invite you to join us for dinner immediately following the Dec. 5 meeting.

FROM THE VICE COMMODORE:

Dear members,

The summer has now turned into fall, the elections are now in our past and we are starting a new year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for hors d'oeuvres over the summer and remember all happy boating hours.

We are all getting ready for winter storage. I hope, you are smiling.! It is only for a few months and then we will be on the water once again.

Once again, Bill and I are representing TOBCA at the Commodore's Balls. We do enjoy doing this for the Club. The people we meet are wonderful and they expand our horizons.

I hope to see you at the December meeting. A few members have suggested having dinner, casual dress, and celebrating Christmas. If you are interested in dining after the meeting, please contact our Rear Commodore, Pat Johnston.

Have A Wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving!

Respectfully,

Carolyn

GREETINGS FROM THE REAR:

Thank you for electing me to be your Rear Commodore. I will do all that I can to support our Commodore and Vice Commodore and to make this the best cruising club on the Bay. (Actually TOBCA already is the best, but I can still strive to make it better.)

My plan for the year is to help TOBCA attract new members, do some fund raising so that we can give more benefits to the members, and to increase membership involvement. It is a truism that the more involved you are, the more fun you have, and the more fun you have the more you want to be involved.

I am open to all ideas for increasing membership, fund raising, and toward making our club functions more interesting and more fun. Please contact me with your ideas and I'll try to see that they are implemented.

We have a great organization and together we can make it grow and prosper!

We opened the 1999 cruising season with 36 boats.

The first cruise of the season took the Dutchess's props.

Diamond Lady opted for a face lift.

Jo-ette had several problems and may be now "retired".

The Candyman was "tied up" for a while.

Then poor Caliope suffered a broken "V" drive.

Bill's Yo-Yo spent a lengthy vacation in Solomon's Island.

Pyramid II had her outdrive ripped off.

Our neighbor, C'est La Vie, had her bulkhead pin her in her slip.

And The Folly, although it changed fuel filters 36 times, killed mosquitoes from here to Washington, DC.

However I am happy to report that we have ended the season with 43 boats in our fleet. All are reportedly now in ship shape, and ready to be turned over to our new Fleet Captain.

HIGH TIDINGS FROM YOUR FLEET CAPTAIN

First, I'd like to thank everyone for their support in electing me your new Fleet Captain. It is going to be a challenge to match Pat's performance as our Fleet Captain last year. I'm sure you'll all agree that she gave us an outstanding cruising season, and I for one, wish to say, "Thank You Pat" for your exemplary service to the club.

I have a few ideas for next season, but what I would really appreciate is, if you would each let me know what you would like to do. Take a few minutes to put your thinking caps on and pick one or two cruises that you would like to do more than anything else. What did we do this year that you would like to repeat or make an annual event if it already isn't? What would you like to do that the club hasn't done for several years?

What would you like to do that the club has never done? And don't forget that all important Vacation Cruise. Where would you like to go for that and how long?

Maybe you're thinking that this is really early to be asking these questions, but it isn't. Marinas will be taking reservations right after the new millennium starts, if we still have electricity that is. Major events, especially, need at least to have tentative reservations made as soon as possible. I would like to get our slips together for the cruises, at least as much as boat size and electricity requirements allow. The only way to accomplish this, however, is to plan next year's cruising schedule early and have everyone show which cruises they are interested in. This does not mean a "carved in stone" commitment. It is merely to estimate the number and type of slips we will require at each of our destinations and make early tentative reservations so they do not spread us out all over the marina.

Your comments and suggestions are always welcome and always appreciated. Please send them to me via E-mail at yorkcomput@aol.com or dutch@tobca.org, Fax at (717) 755-7522, phone (717) 757-4513. Let's all work together to make next year a safe and enjoyable cruising season.

Thanks,

Dutch

FROM THE SUPPLY OFFICER

I would like to thank Dave for choosing Judi and I to be your Supply Officers. We will do our best to serve you.

Christmas is coming fast so it's time to think about gifts! Maybe start a charm bracelet with a TOBCA charm, then add charms from other clubs; or how about a TOBCA hat with our pin and later add pins from other clubs? You could start the season with a new burgee and shirts for the captain and crew; or a night shirt for your first mate and a tank top for the captain to stay cool on those hot summer days.

Give us a call to place your order!
