TOP OF THE BAY
CRUISING ASSOCIATION |
North East, Maryland
DOCKLINE - September 1999
FROM THE COMMODORE:
Hello to all my good friends! This has been an extrordinarily busy summer. Boats are selling like hot cakes!
We've been so busy, you probably thought I forgot you. No way! Carolyn and I went on the cruise to Kent Narrows and last week we went to Tolchester by land cruiser. That same day we attended the CBYCA meeting at the Kent Island Yacht Club. The CBYCA has also been extra busy, with new legislation and the addition of more Yacht Clubs.
The summer seems to have passed by so quickly, and we only hope that we got to spend some time with all of you. It's only two more months, and this Commodore turns into a PC. That's the best job on the bay!
Please make an attempt to make the next meeting. We're honoring PC Ron Wiertel, and expect a major turnout. This man was Mr. TOBCA.
P.S. Carolyn and I would like to congratulate Jack and Candy on their upcoming marriage. They are most certainly the perfect couple.
See you in September...
FROM THE VICE COMMODORE:
Here it is September! Hard to believe the summer is behind us.
Soon we'll be entering another season, with our elections just around the corner.
I've enjoyed this summer's cruises and look forward to seeing more of our members as we turn towards our fall and winter schedule.
This has been a very successful year for our organization. We've accomplished quite a bit.
Our membership is steadily growing, and the turnout at our events has been terrific.
You've been especially supportive to our website. On February 14, of this year, we started with a small page. We will have been on line only 7 months, and have been visited over 900 times. Our page has grown up, and I cannot thank Jerry Klein enough for his time and talent so graciously donated to us.
When given the opportunity, I've asked the members what they wanted at our meetings. Most of you want the meetings to be short. Many of you said you are interested in picking up information.
Combining your interests, we are attempting to be informative and brief at our monthly meetings. Your support at the meetings is important to your officers. When you show up in great numbers, it encourages us to work even harder. I'm personally grateful for the support you have shown this administration throughout the year.
We've had many requests to bring back the bus trip to the New York City Boat Show. It's my intention to repeat the trip this winter.
The next meetings are very important. The September 26th meeting will be held at the North East VFW at 12 Noon. There will be an Officers meeting at 11:30 AM. Please bring your copy of the current and proposed By-Laws. If you do not have a copy, please contact Candy Thompson (610-383-5733)
The Members meeting at Noon will include a guest speaker from QLube Marine Services. Immediately following the meeting we will hold a memorial service for PC Ron Wiertel. Officers are asked to wear their summer uniforms.
TOBCA has pledged a donation to Hospice in Ron's name. Anyone wishing to contribute may do so at this meeting.
At the October 24th meeting, also at the North East VFW, you will have the opportunity to elect a new group of officers and directors.
Let me see your face in the place.
HIGH TIDINGS FROM YOUR FLEET CAPTAIN:
Since the last newsletter, TOBCA attended Thunder on the Narrows weekend, and it was a lot of fun. We had arranged with the racing association to get us door-to-door transportation from the marina to Kent Island Yacht Club for the races, and that worked out great.
Our next cruise was to Tolchester Marina for our "grandchildren cruise." It was our first "bad weather" forecast for a weekend cruise, but no one canceled, and the weather cooperated after all with no rain and the sun coming out. We had ten grandchildren with TOBCA and everyone seemed to have a good time even, though the fish were not biting.
Members told me that the "grandchildren cruise" was a great idea. (Thank you Bobby Faulkner). Several members have requested that we make this an annual event.
The winners of the water balloon toss were Nicholas (Todd) and Rae (Varnes). Everyone had a lot of laughs with that game.
The winner of the fishing contest was Rae (Varnes) who was ingenious enough to go into the water and catch a dead fish that was floating by. That fish was 16 inches long and the only fish "caught" that day.
Our next club cruise is over Labor Day weekend to the "Lot." Anyone who has not yet signed up, please call me by September 1st. The tentative itinerary is that boats will start arriving on Friday, September 3. Dinner that night is everyone on their own. There are charcoal grills there to use and everyone will do their own thing.
We'll be crabbing Saturday morning and cooking crabs starting about noon, and we'll start eating crabs about 1:00. That evening we'll be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs (supplied ). Sunday night is "pit beef" and chicken (again supplied). Everyone should bring a side dish for Saturday and Sunday dinner.
When I've said "supplied" I mean that our grocery committee, headed by Betty and Nolan Todd, will be picking up the meat, chicken and whatever and we will be distributing the cost among the members attending the event.
DJ music on Sunday is by Toner Sound, from our own Brian Toner. Monday, Labor Day will have us all heading back to our home ports. Directions to the Lot are enclosed.
The next event will be September 18 at Chesapeake City. Please contact me to sign up. I want to know how many are coming so I can make reservations at the Tap Room for dinner Saturday night as well as how many slips need to be reserved. Those that want to join us, but want to raft-up are welcome, but I still need to know about dinner.
September 25 is Jack and Candy's wedding celebration at the bay house. Don't forget to RSVP - and state by land or by water.
Our Frostbite Cruise is scheduled for Oct 1-3 at Inner Harbor Marina. If you are not already signed up, I don't believe that I can get extra slips so you will probably have to find room on your own. If you want to know if you are already signed up, check with Dave or me.
Looking forward to seeing you on the water.
