DOCKLINE - August 1999
FROM THE VICE COMMODORE:
On July 12, 1999, Past Commodore, Ron Wiertel succumbed to cancer.
As you well know, Ron was no stranger at TOBCA. He had only been a member a short time when he decided to go through the chairs. Ultimately to be past commodore, was his goal.
Ron was very unselfish with his time. While managing a large manufacturing company, he always found time for TOBCA.
A lot could be learned from him, particularly his style of leading by example. Ron was THE ambassador of TOBCA!
I can only speak for myself, but I feel most would agree that Ron will be noticeably missed. His shoes will be very hard to fill. I am proud to have known him.
My condolences to his wife, Jane, his daughters and son.
For those with web access, Jerry has put a memorial on our web site in honor of Ron Wiertel.
Speaking of the web, if you haven't noticed, our web site has been visited over 800 times in the five months it's been up. Fantastic!
The up coming "on the go" meeting at Lippencott Marina in Kent Narrows at 12 noon on August 8 looks like it will be well attended. We have memberships to vote on, etc. Please make an effort to get your face in the place.
The next regular meeting at the VFW North East will be held on September 26. We plan to have a guest speaker from Q Lube Marine Services. Mark your calendar.
HIGH TIDINGS FROM YOUR FLEET CAPTAIN:
TOBCA went on their vacation cruise to Washington DC and it was wonderful! We had a little rough weather in the beginning, but went into Calvert Marina, which is a really pretty place. From there we went to Colonial Beach Marina and celebrated Bobby Faulkner's birthday. The next day we headed for Gangplank Marina in Washington, DC. We had a really great location with half of the attractions within walking distance and the Metro was only two blocks from us.
On July 4th we had a TOBCA cookout at the marina and then, from the comfort of our own boats, we had the best seats for the DC fireworks. The fireworks just came closer and closer until it felt like you could reach up and touch them. It was fantastic! For those of you that weren't with us, Dave recorded them on the camcorder and will have it playing on March 4, 2000 at our Commodore's Ball.
From DC we went up to Port Tobacco Marina, on the most scenic river off the Potomac and home of the Turf Club (off-track betting), where we all had a good time and the guys won money.
From there we went to Cole Point Plantation, one of the nicest marinas that I have ever visited. Then it was on to Point Look-out and then, home. It was a wonderful trip. Thanks to all of those that went with us and shared this wonderful experience!
The following week-end was the North East Water Festival and the TOBCA cook-out. We had about 30 folks on that event and I hope everyone had as much fun as I did.
Last week-end was the raft-up at Still Pond and Dutch and Carol, showing that they are turning into hearty boaters, ventured through the haze and fog to join the club at one of the most beautiful places for a raft-up. After the bad visibility start, the weather cooperated and turned cooler and absolutely beautiful.
Our next planned cruise is Thunder on the Narrows on Aug. 6th and 7th at Lippencott' s Marine. We have eleven boats signed up and it should be great. If you haven't signed up yet and want to go, please call Lippencott's at 410-827-9300 and make your own reservation being sure to tell them you are TOBCA so you will be docked with us.
The only other scheduled cruise in August is the "grandchildren" cruise to Tolchester, which should have a lot of fun things happening, including a fishing contest for the kids as well as other scheduled activities and a cook-out on Saturday night.
Labor Day week-end will be at The Lot and will be wonderful, but I can't believe I am talking about Labor Day already....can't be that soon!
The rest of the season's cruise schedule is at the back of the newsletter. Let me know if you want to sign up for anything, and as always, let me know your suggestions and ideas.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
How do I begin to thank you all! Since this all began you have been so supportive with your prayers and cards. Your friendship meant a lot to Ron and me and we appreciate all you have done.
Thank you all,
Jane Wiertel
Immediately following the September 26 meeting at the North East VFW a Memorial Service will be held for Ron Wiertel. We hope you are able to join us in honoring our friend.
Our condolences also to Jack Varnes and his family on the loss of his mother, Laura Varnes, on July 26, 1999.
| Reminder: Monthly member meetings are held on the 4th Sunday of each month at the North East, Maryland VFW. Changes will be published in the Dockline and on our web site. |
