DOCKLINE - May 1999
FROM THE VICE COMMODORE:
Our April seminar turned out to be very successful. Thank you to everyone who took the time and interest to attend.
As announced, our next meeting will be held at McDaniels Yacht Basin in North East, MD on May 23 and the topic is fire! It's been decided that we will devote the entire meeting to the subject, skipping our usual formalities. There will be an officers/directors meeting on my boat (Epicurean) at 3:30, general meeting at 4:30.
We've obtained the proper permit and plan to do controlled burns, allowing everyone the opportunity to handle a fire extinguisher. Ask yourself, "Would you know what to do in case of fire?" Any member attending this seminar is welcome to bring his own extinguisher. If yours is a few years old and of the disposable type, you may consider replacing it and putting the old one to good use here. Gary Kunnas has offered to donate a few he has sitting around. All contributions are welcome. Our instructor will be bringing 20 lb extinguishers. We will be obligated to reimburse him for the material that we use. It will be less expensive for you to bring your own, but not necessary.
This will be our last meeting in North East until September, when we will return to the VFW. Summer meetings will be held on various cruises. Watch for announcements.
Thank you to Jane Wiertel for the nice job on our membership directory! Going over our membership list, I couldn't help but notice that we are going into the 1999 season with ten more boats than we had in the beginning of 1998. We should all be proud that these folks chose TOBCA.
If you haven't looked lately, our web site has been visited over 500 times. The summer schedule is up and running and there are photos from some of our events. Thanks, Jerry!
I'll end here on the serious side. P.C. Ron Wiertel is back in the fight with his cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with Ron.
HIGH TIDINGS FROM YOUR FLEET CAPTAIN:
I guess I was too enthusiastic about starting the cruise season early so the only boat ready to go on the May 1 cruise was the Epicurean. No one else signed up so Captain Dave and I decided not to go raft up by ourselves on Worton Creek. We worked on the boat instead.
The next event is May 15 when TOBCA is going to two yacht club openings. The first opening of the day is for Sassafras YC at 1100 AM at Skip Jack Marina. After that event we will be heading across the street to Georgetown Yacht Basin for a boat parade at 200, followed by the Georgetown Yacht Club opening. For those who have not attended an opening, I'd like to tell you that there are some formalities that give it a bit of structure, but basically it's a party and lots of fun! We'll be there and I hope a lot of you will join us. Give me a call.
The following event on the cruise schedule is Memorial Day week-end at the Baltimore Yacht Club on the Middle River. We have thirteen boats going so with a little luck we might win the prize for "most boats from one club". Whether we win or not, we'll have a grand time.
Take note Baltimore Yacht Club monitors Channel 9. TOBCA will be on Channel 69.
Check the cruise schedule and sign up for other cruises you would like to do. The schedule as it exists right now is at the back of this newsletter. For the most updated version at any time, visit our web site.
FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN:
By now, everyone's back at their marinas preparing the boat for the upcoming season. With that, you now have an opportunity to recruit a few new members and maybe win the $100 reward for bringing in the most new members this season.
We will be sending all members a fresh application. You are welcome to photocopy it or just ask and you will be sent as many as you need. Good luck!
A big TOBCA welcome to Mike and Nancy Handzo who were voted in as members at the last meeting. You will find their address, etc. in the membership directory.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
