CRUISING ASSOCIATION |
North East, Maryland
DOCKLINE - March 1999
FROM THE COMMODORE:
Well the winter months are behind us. Now, the reason I say this is that we've just had our Commodore's Ball and the 20th of March is the first day of Spring which means that everyone will be getting back on the water and boating again. Halleluja!
Now, back to the Ball - we had a great turnout, especially from TOBCA club members. It was great to see so many of you there. I would like to thank all of you for coming and hope you had a great time. I would especially like to thank one club member who drove over 3 hours to attend! That's dedication! Art Young and Cindy live North of the Poconos. I would also like to give special thanks to the following people; Erni Heiser, Jane Weirtel, Candy Thompson and Carolyn Herbert for all their hard work in putting the Ball together; Dave and Karen Kent for taking care of the Raffle table; David Mangano for the beautiful art work at the entrance to the ballroom; Dale Moffett for an outstanding job as Master of Ceremonies; Wendy Mangano for her inspiring invocation; Bob Faulkner for donationg the beer for the hospitality room; and everyone who brought food for the hospitality room - no one went away hungry!
The Raffle winners were as follows:
Now, back to club business. I would like to thank Dale Moffett for accepting the position of Membership Chairperson. Our next meeting is on March 28th at 330 PM at the North East, MD VFW.
Hope to see you there....
FROM THE VICE COMMODORE:
First the big news. I'm proud to announce that TOBCA is now officially part of cyber space. Introducing the TOBCA web site, www.angelfire.com/on/TOBCA. This puts us among the few power boat clubs on the bay to take advantage of this communication marvel. We now possess a live electronic bulletin board, featuring our events, links to our officers, CBYCA, Boat US, the weather and much more. In addition. we have been chosen as a link to the Maryland YC and are listed in the Chesapeake Bay Boaters Resource. By the time you receive this mailing, we will also be a yacht club link on the Boat US web site. I'm personally very proud of the job our webmaster, Jerry Klein, has done to make this one of the best web sites anywhere. On behalf of our entire organization, I want to thank Jerry for his time and talents he so graciously put toward this project.
Thank you also to Betty and Nolan Todd for hosting a terrific cocktail party for us, and to Nolan for escorting us into the quaint town of Easton, where we enjoyed strolling through streets of yesteryear. That evening was TOBCA's return to Suicide Bridge. With a name like Suicide Bridge, you'd expect to see a huge bridge towering over this body of water known as Cabin Creek. In reality, the restaurant with its many levels, towers over this quaint country side wooden bridge. The upper level of the restaurant is set up as a bar with a wrap around dining area with 2 stone fire places. There's also a screened side porch, outside deck seating and a very spacious lower dining area, offering everyone a view of this bucolic setting. We originally had hoped to dine on the Dorothy Megan, a reproduction of a turn of the century 80 foot paddle-wheeler, but due to some work being done on her, could not. The crew here is accustomed to large parties, therefore the 18 of us were no challenge. Had you been with us, you would know two things for certain. You would have learned the "legend of Suicide Bridge", and you don't leave "Suicide" hungry.
TOBCA members are invited to attend the annual Oyster Roast and silent auction at the North East River Yacht Club, on Saturday, March 27th. They will be setting a table (or tables) aside for us. Cocktails are at 530, buffet at 630. Cost is $29 per person and there will be a menu with the carved prime rib with trimmings for the non-oyster lovers! Anyone interested, please contact me for more information. Deadline for reservations is 10AM on Sunday, March 21st.
Hope to see your face in the place.....
HIGH TIDINGS FROM YOUR FLEET CAPTAIN:
We've added a few more events to our summer cruising schedule. "Thunder on the Bay" at the Kent Island Yacht Club was such a success last year that by popular demand we have put it in the schedule. So mark your calendars for August 7 and 8 and let me know so that I can get our reservations made.
We have also decided to return to Baltimore Inner Harbor for the Fells Point Festival which will be the weekend of October 1, 2, and 3.
The vacation cruise to Washington, DC is now up to 12 boats. If you have even a slight inclination that you might want to go, please let me know. We have boats leaving from various parts of the bay at various times to make this vacation cruise so there is no reason to worry about traveling alone.
We plan to see Mount Vernon from the water for some picture taking and lifetime memories. Although there is a dock there, private boats are not allowed to tie up, only cruise tour boats.
After we leave Gangplank Marina on July 7, we are considering a stop at the town of Occoquan and then on to Port Tobacco River which is reported to be the most scenic on the Bay.
Canoe Neck Creek on St. Clements Bay hosts a small museum which might be nice and then on to Coles Point, Virginia and the Coles Point Plantation Marina for Thursday night. The next day we'll head on down to Smith Creek and possible stay the night at Point Look-out Marina on Friday. I want to hear ideas from the boats that are going as to what your pleasure is.
I have had a request for a "grandchild cruise". We will probably go to Tolchester Marina for this event. If interested, contact me. You don't need grandchildren to go, but they are welcome if you have them. It might be that some boaters would like their families and grandchildren to "land cruise" to Tolchester to be with us. I've talked to the Marina and they will help me set up either a clam bake or crab feast. We don't have a date yet, but get back to me and let me know if you have an interest in this event.
I am open to all suggestions and ideas. Call me, make your reservations, tell me what you would like me to schedule!

Give me a call if you would like to participate.
