TOP OF THE BAY

CRUISING ASSOCIATION

North East, Maryland

DOCKLINE - October 2001

FROM THE COMMODORE:

It's hard to believe that this is my last report to you as Commodore. The year just sped by filled with yacht club balls, openings and lots of cruises. We met so many nice people this last year and got to know some TOBCA members even better.

At the beginning of my year I set forth my goal to be "increased involvement" of the members of TOBCA. I believe that the goal has been met. We had twelve boats on our vacation cruise this year instead of the six or seven that went the last three years. Another indication is that we have had familiar faces volunteering for new positions in the organization. As in all good organizations, the goal was not met by me alone but by the combined efforts of the entire bridge. My sincere thanks to my bridge officers. Not of the bridge but super important, my thanks to my "Sunshine Lady", Betty Todd for her speedy response to all my requests. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Erni Heiser for doing the news letter as well as other numerous tasks, to thank Dave Mangano for the ball invitations and the directory, and a special thank you to our web master, Jerry Klein , for continually updating and maintaining our web site.

Sometimes what members forget while they are having fun cruising with TOBCA is that some members put a lot of effort into having that cruise take place. Someone comes up with the idea for a cruise to wherever, and then someone writes it up for the newsletter, and then the newsletter gets published and mailed. Someone calls and e-mails members to get them interested in the cruise. Someone makes the reservations at the marina or yacht club for our boats. This "call" ends up being "calls" because of people signing up at the last minute and last minute cancellations. The cruise also requires co-ordination with whatever yacht club that is going to be at the destination.

This has worked to our advantage in having extra nice things happening on our cruise such as Worton Point Yacht Club inviting us to their champagne brunch, which by the way their brunch only come off because of the efforts of a lot of their yacht club members. Another good example was when we scheduled a cruise to the Kent Island Yacht Club. They didn't have anything special scheduled for that weekend, so their active members planned a cook-out with DJ and dancing with a "survivor" party theme. It was great fun especially since our Frank Rooks was on the winning team.

My point is that all these fun cruises we do is from the combined efforts of peoples' contributions of work and ideas. Vera came up with the idea of the "hermit crab" races and carried the hermit crabs and race course paraphernalia with her on the Vera Jean. All that gathered around and placed their bets had fun.. My sincere thanks go to all those members that contributed to TOBCA having a great cruising summer.

Don't forget elections will be held immediately following the next regular meeting, which is Sunday, October 28, 2001, at 3:30 at the VFW in North East, Maryland.

As my Captain Dave would say…

Let's see your face in the place.

FROM THE REAR COMMODORE:

I hope everyone had a good year of boating like Judy & I did. I hope everyone has a good fall and that the weather holds until all the boats are winterized.

It is also now the time to look toward elections. Come out and vote at the October meeting.

Also, keep in mind that the club could always use new members, so go out and "beat the docks".

Last but not least, start thinking about getting ads for the directory.

FROM THE FLEET CAPTAIN:

The 2001 boating season is in our wake!

It was my pleasure to serve as your fleet captain. My thanks goes out to my wife Vera for planning the land activities. The friendship our club has to offer should not be missed by any of our members. Boaters are a special breed and, like fish in a school, we all gain from each other. Our last cruise to Baltimore Fells Point was a must do cruise. Our community dinner on Friday night was a gourmet delight. We were joined by three boats from Maryland Cruising Club.

I am sure next year will bring new experiences and more friendships. One of the best things that happened to me aside from marring Vera was to join Top Of The Bay Cruising Association. Our next meeting will be to elect new officers for the 2002 boating season. After the meeting we will be going out for dinner. Lets all try to attend.

FROM THE IMMEDIATE PAST COMMODORE

Soon it will be the one year anniversary and end of my lofty term as "Chairman of the Board". TOBCA will soon be introducing a whole new staff of officers.

Please give them the support and encouragement they deserve. Remember that they "volunteered" to work for you.

I am personally looking forward to new ideas and cruise destinations in the coming years.

Let's see your face at the election place!
