CRUISING ASSOCIATION

North East, Maryland

DOCKLINE - August 2001

FROM THE COMMODORE:

It's mid August and the cruising schedule is almost done. As we look back it's been a fun summer. We still have some neat things coming up. The next big thing we're anticipating is Labor Day weekend at Todd's Lot. I hope everyone has been working on their Gilligan's Island costumes, boat decorations and maybe skits(?).

For those members that haven't been to Todd's Lot for Labor Day week end, here's a sketch of what generally happens:

Friday (Aug 31) boats arrive and everyone gets set up and oriented. Dinner is on your own but the grill will be working and you can use it to cook whatever.

Saturday - A.M. Early The crab boat goes out with JR at the wheel. Those TOBCA members who want to, go with him to help him catch crabs. Breakfast is a community breakfast with one-half of the ladies bringing a breakfast food to share with others. Noontime - The crabs are cooked (supplemented by bought crabs if we didn't catch enough) and we pig out on crabs, also cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for those who want them. Dinner time - we have a community dinner with Nolan's grilled chicken and the side dishes and deserts brought by TOBCA members - each boat to bring side or desert for 6 or more people. Evening entertainment is headed by Brian Toner featuring a "survivor contest". Brian has requested that if you have a dinghy, bring it.

Sunday A.M. community breakfast with the other half of the ladies bringing something for breakfast, again enough to share and we all eat and all have a good time. Noontime - General Membership Meeting - This is in replacement of an Aug meeting and is held at Todd's Lot because we have the biggest number of people attending that weekend. It is an important meeting because the committee is reporting back with their recommendations for next year's Bridge Officers. Lunchtime hamburgers and hot dogs. Dinner - Pit Beef ( provided by Commodore) grilled chicken for those who don't eat red meat and community dinner with sides and deserts furnished by members. Sometime after supper we will have the judging of the Gilligan contests.

Monday A.M. community breakfast with everyone cleaning out there refrigerators of breakfast food. If you don't have anything to bring to this, don't worry. There is always plenty. Everyone will be packing up and heading back to home port.

During the entire weekend there will be games and contests going on for those who wish to join in or to compete. There will be laughter, fun and comradery

Cost $$ Dockage and electric and ice are free (donated by Betty and Nolan Todd). The cost of the chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, rolls, crabs ,condiments and supplies is split over the number of boats attending. The day trippers are charged by what day they came for which food. We work it out as fairly as possible. The highest we ever had to charge was $35 per couple for the entire week end and that was because we had to buy all the crabs. We caught none that year. Some years we catch enough and don't have to buy any.

Note: This is a private home, not a public marina. The Todds are nice enough to allow us to come for the weekend as there guests. Electricity is limited so do not plan on running your air conditioner.

We also ask that people help. Offer to do what you can, cook, cleanup, trash removal, whatever. Erni Heiser and Candy Varnes are in charge of the organization of work. Brian Toner is in charge of entertainment. Contact these people with what you can contribute. This is a fun week end and it works out much better if everyone chips in with a helping hand and their own special talent.

If you are planning on attending by boat or by land call Don and Vera and let them know. 1-856-848-1408.

Again, please note that the normally held Aug. general meeting will be Sunday, Sept 2 noon at Todd's Lot.

SUNSHINE REPORT

Don Gortowski was bit by a spider on his foot. Because Don is diabetic he has had a very bad reaction and has been in the hospital twice. He's on antibiotics and hopefully is now on the mend.

Phil Mastrippolito, who tore the tendons in his leg playing baseball in the beginning of the summer is still in a cast. He knows he won't be playing in his team's playoffs but is hoping that the leg will be mended by skiing season.

Jerry Cook is still going for cortisone shots in his foot. The doctors have said either learn to live with the pain or be operated on. Jerry is making up his mind.

Betty Todd is scheduled to have both knees replaced on September 10.

Good luck Betty.
