TOP OF THE BAY

CRUISING ASSOCIATION

North East, Maryland

DOCKLINE - October 2000

FROM THE COMMODORE:

As my term of TOBCA Commodore comes to an end, I look back over my years as an officer to see what we've accomplished. I'd like to note the following:

1. With the help and efforts of Jerry Klein, TOBCA has one of the finest web sites on the bay.
2. For the first time out club has a Fleet Chaplain, a Fleet Surgeon, and Webmaster amongst our ranks.
3. Our membership has almost doubled.
4. The TOBCA ad/yearbook campaign is a great success.
5. The goals of the Commodore's budget were met and the Club stands solvent!
6. Our by-laws have been overhauled and distributed amongst all the members.
7. Meetings are better attended and I think my "guest speaker program" has contributed to this.

This past season alone Pat and I traveled over 100 hours and 1,500 miles on our bay. Someone asked my how much was spent on gas. I don't want to know!

We've made a lot of new friends and lost a few of our own. Overall I've enjoyed serving you and encouraging others to do the same.

Thank you to all who did their part and helped make my Command a pleasure.

This month's meeting is also our Change of Watch. Please come out and support the new officers who will be working for you in the coming year.

Next Meeting: October 22, 2000 at North East VFW at 4:00 PM

Sunshine Report

Heartfelt sympathy to Matt and Connie Maher on the recent loss of Matt's mother.

Carol Jean Faulkner has started chemotherapy. Cards and prayers are most welcome. Hopefully, with the chemo and all of the positive energy thoughts from her friends, all will be well.

It seems that Judi's broken leg is a lot better because Dave and Pat saw her dancing at her wedding. So now Judi Armington is Judi Cook. Congratulations Jerry and Judi!

Jack and Candy Varnes left October 16, 2000 on the intercoastal route for Florida. This is a trip that most of us only dream about. Good-luck, Candyman!

GREETINGS FROM THE REAR:

We have just completed our "frostbite" cruise, the last cruise of the 2000 season and this year the term "frostbite" wasn't just a term but a reality. I will miss seeing my boating friends every week or two, but I hope that our members will come out to the monthly meetings and attend whatever land activities we do this winter so that we can all stay close.

As I finish the year as your Rear, I look back at this time as being a lot of fun and very fulfilling. TOBCA went to a lot of neat places and we had many cocktail parties and community dinners and a few community breakfasts. Lots of good times and good food. One of our members laughingly said that one of the requirements to become a member of TOBCA must be that you have to be a good cook because we all are! From that statement was born an idea. So we are going to make a TOBCA cookbook this coming year. Jen Toner and Erni Heiser are co-chairing this project. Start figuring out which of your prize recipes that you want to see in print and start e-mailing them to Jen or Erni. Our intent is to make a fantastic cook book and sell it at the Ball as one of our fund raisers.

So many great ideas came from the membership last year and we implemented them. Some of those ideas provided profit for the club which helps keep our dues at the same low price that they have been since the beginning. Those money making ideas like the "ad campaign" and the "fantasy auction" were ideas that came from the members. Some of the most fun ideas also came from the members, the best (in my opinion) of which came from Brian Toner for the Hawaiian theme and then others jumped on the idea with more thoughts like the best decorated boat contest and the best costumed captain and first mate contest and then the beauty of the skit put on by the Toto family. Wow!

As I look back, although there were our sad times, we also had a lot of fun. TOBCA is filled with an amazing amount of creativity and it shines through. I am proud to be one of your members and proud to have served as an officer.
