CRUISING ASSOCIATION |
North East, Maryland
DOCKLINE - March 2000
FROM THE COMMODORE:
Thank you all for making our commodore's ball the most successful ever. When I say successful, not only do I mean the number in attendance, but the fact that our members were not the minority of attendees. Special thanks to all who worked to make things happen and go smoothly. Erni, you're a magician. For those that don't know, Erni turns empty rooms into amazingly fun places. She makes great tickets, too, with her computer and sewing machine. A special thanks to Candy, who put up with me and all the last minute calls. To Dave M., who designed new envelopes, printed invitations and donated the fine programs and photo board, to Brian Toner, who gave up a great portion of his evening to be our MC, to Jerry and Judy, who lugged all the auction items, to Mike who has brought us closer to God, to Dave and Karen, who doubled our raffle sales, to Don G. who took some great photos and to Bobby and Carol Faulkner, who were unable to attend, but donated beer and wine for the hospitality room and $110.00 just in case we needed anything else. Myapologies if I left anyone out.
It truly was a night Pat and I will always remember.
One fellow could not make the ball, as much as he wanted to. Our Fleet Captain, Dutch, washospitalized for 4 weeks. He should be at home now resting as you read this. Dutch appeared to be in good spirits, and is looking forward to getting back on his boat. Your cards and phone calls are very welcome.
We're nearing the deadline for our ad program. Anyone wishing to help your club with an ad, or willing to take 5 minutes of your time to ask someone for one, please do so ASAP. The new membership directory is under construction. I've been shown the new cover and some of the contents. You will be very surprised upon receiving it.
At the last 2 meetings, the officers revised our bylaws and constitution. Most of you didn't know we even had them, let alone having seen them. For the first time in 11 years they will be printed in your membership directory. Kudos to our officers for a job well done. We can thank Candy and Erni for the hours they spent on this project.
Next meeting, March, 26th, 3:00 PM, at the North East VFW, we'll be hosting a guest speaker from the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association. They aren't here to sell anything or ask you to do anything. "You" as a member should be aware of the benefits we derive by being members of CBYCA. Remember the meetings are free, the parking is free. Let me see your face in the place.
GREETINGS FROM THE REAR:
Our Commodore's Ball 2000 was a huge success. From the reports I received, everyone had a good time. I know that Dave and I did. Thank you one and all.
It is that time of year again, when our membership renewals are due. Please mail in your renewal form and check so that you won't be counted as delinquent and so that you will appear in the TOBCA directory with all current information.
New members or old members, having questions about TOBCA or what's happening, feel free to call me and I'll answer your questions or find out the answer for you. One of our goals this year is to improve communication so that everyone is aware of what the club is doing so that no one misses out on the fun, for lack of information.
I will do my best to keep everyone up to date, but I am still looking for volunteers for a phone chain. One of the best ways to get first information is to be one of my phone volunteers. I'll call the volunteers first and they will each call five others to spread the word. If interested, contact me.
FROM THE FLEET CAPTAIN
Fleet captain Dutch asked me to pinch hit while he's recovering from his hospital stay. It's VERY IMPORTANT that you read this. Regarding the Chestertown Tea Party cruise, as you are aware the marina sold out early. I've made special arrangements with them to allow us to raft off those who couldn't get a slip. You need to contact Dan at Chestertown Marina @ 410-778-3616. Tell him you're a member of TOBCA and wish to join us at the tea party. Please let me know you contacted them, so we know to expect you.
Also, the TALL SHIPS cruise to inner harbor. There is not an open slip in Baltimore that weekend. We have a limited amount a space reserved. Those planning on joining us on that cruise must get your deposit to me ASAP. The space will be first come first served. I'm asking for a $50 deposit from each boat. Make check payable to TOBCA and mail to me ASAP. This may be a last call on booking both these cruises.
Captain Dave
FROM THE MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY
All membership dues for 2000 must be in by March 29th. We extended the deadline this year since the forms were distributed late. The membership directory is going to print on March 31st, so we need your form ASAP.
A big TOBCA Welcome to the following new members:
SUNSHINE REPORT:
We are happy to report that Bill Cousins is on the mend following surgery last week. Another recent surgery patient was seen dancing at the TOBCA Ball last Saturday night. Way to go Nancy Handzo! Dutch is home now, being cared for by his first mate, Carol. Good luck Carol!
FROM PC DALE
Dear Fellow Top of the Bay Members,
Fortunately, the dust from moving 1,300 miles, then repeatedly traversing the state of Florida to straighten out my Mother's affairs and get her settled in a nearby long term care facility has finally started to settle. I was just about ready to go back to work! Just kidding.
Ann and I can't begin to thank the folks who came out to see us off at the January meeting. The gift I was presented, a clock and thermometer combo, was the first item out of our packing boxes and will remain a continuing reminder of the great folks we met and the good times we enjoyed over our decade of exploring the Chesapeake with Top of the Bay. Those friendships and memories are priceless. Incidentally, the thermometer has yet to dip below 70!
As I recounted at the January meeting, I was extremely honored to serve as your third Commodore in 1993 and that pride has continued to grow in my role as Past Commodore. Despite some challenges -- and what organization doesn't encounter a bit of choppy water here and there -- strong leaders, officers who cared and members who were concerned have enabled Top of the Bay to not only survive, but thrive. It is a great example of the nice things that can happen when people work together and I know that under Commodore Dave you will continue to build on this momentum.
Thanks again for your thoughtful gift, kind words and the wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.
Dale
